Honu Rising

The stars gently begin to give way to the pale blue glow of the morning as the day yawns awake. The eastern horizon hints at a warm welcome with shades of sherbert, and the details of the landscape slowly melt into the realm of visual perception. The waves hushshshsh ever steady, as rustling autumn leaves being slowly pushed by an old broom.

Magic is Creation.

Honu, Sea Turtles, are some very magical creatures. I’ve encountered numerous honu since coming to Hawaii… and many at their place of respite, Punalu’u Black Sand Beach. This morning I was greeted by three honu who were resting on the beach… I didn’t photograph them because I didn’t want to disturb them, plus the sky was still too dark. So I walked the coast a little, and saw a rock in this reflective tide-pool that was just a little too round. Upon closer examination you can see that this honu shell is huge… much more to it than what is on the surface.

The deep red/orange color in the upper left frame is smoke from the Halema’uma’u crater (Kilauea) in Volcano National Park.
